'Tis the Season

Ever catch lightning bugs as a kid? I used to look forward to the start of summer and the emergence of fireflies so I could swipe them gently from the air and place them in a jar to watch their magical asses blink-blink. Eventually, I learned that if you hold them between your fingers with one hand, you can turn them over, grab the ass with your other hand, and yank off the blink-blink. We'd stick the gooey bits on our fingers and prance around the yard with glowing "rings." Sick, isn't it?

Needless to say, I haven't yet taught my children how to pull off the lil glowing bit and am not sure if I ever will. Now, my joy comes from seeing my anklebiters run around the yard awkwardly plucking the little buggers from the night sky and placing them in a jar to stare in awe at the wonder of those itty-bitty lights. "Light bug! Light bug!" screams Zach, my 2-year old, so excited to see his flickering friends. Oh, to see the world through the eyes of a child again.

I'll admit that I, too, used to dismember fireflies and wear them as jewelry. I will also refrain from passing this bit of childhood cruelty on to my children, although I'm sure they'll discover it on their own.

Seeing the world through a child's eyes again is a thrill of parenthood that is as unexpected as it is wonderful.

Proof yet again of my weirdness. Never did it. Can't imagine wanting too, even now when I'm a bitter old man.

Caught them and put them into jars. I wanted to collect enough by which to read, when we were on the farm, since we had no electricity. Never did collect enough.

Ah, Fletcher, don't feel too bad. Jimmy and I will likely burn in Hell for all the lightning bugs we dismembered. :)
