This is a great list, and I see a lot of things on it that I would put on a list of my own. What's a "green" burial? When I die, I want a plain pine box, no embalming, buried at home with a traditional wake, and a willow tree planted over my remains. I think that's legal in most states.

:)

You are the only other person I know of that has polycystic ovarian syndrome other than my wife.

Interesting

Very interesting. I enjoyed this. A lot of these would make my own list. Now I have to get creative for my own, ha.

I would be honored to play guitar at your funeral, although I probably wouldn't make it past the first verse.

Heather - a green funeral is very similar to what you described. I'm sure there are variances on how it can be done. I actually got the idea from the HBO series "Six Feet Under" when one of the main characters died. He had wanted a green funeral and that's what he got. There is no embalming, no chemicals, no casket... the deceased is simply placed in a burial shroud and laid to rest in the ground. Some folks prefer to do it in a nature preserve of some kind, in which case there is no burial marker or headstone allowed, other than something natural like a stone or a tree. Many organizations that offer green funerals will plot your final resting place with GPS coordinates so your loved ones can find your grave in the future. Some organizations ask that the family plant a group of flowers that would typically be naturally-occuring in that particular environment; others might ask the family to plant a tree. In the end, you join the Earth and leave as little of yourself or your life behind as is possible. I loved the idea and how it was done on the HBO show. On the show, surviving family members dug the grave, said a poem, or sang a song and it was really, really beautiful and spiritual. I bawled my eyes out and decided right then and there that that was how I wanted to go. :)

Davis - PCO is probably very underdiagnosed. I remember reading about it years and years ago and I had to take a book to my doctor's office to show it to her. In effect, I diagnosed myself. I think doctors are much more aware today because of the nasty side effects of PCO - insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity, and infertility to name a few. It sucks, but it's nice to know that we're not alone in the world. :)

Jimmy - I'm sorry that I haven't yet asked you formally and officially to do the honors at my funeral. Seriously, however, I would be very pleased if you would accept the job. I've always loved listening to you play and sing and I really like what the song's lyrics say to me.

So, when we're 82 and I pass away into the night, will you be there to send me off?

I used to watch that show, but then I moved and didn't have cable anymore. Do you think if there was a poll, you'd find a higher percentage of biologists (as opposed to everyone else) who understand the logic of giving your mortal physical remains back to the Earth, where they can do some good? I think so.

I agree with Jimmy, btw...I'm going to have to jump on the confessional bandwagon and see what I can come up with. It's too tempting not to.

:)
